About the Artist

“Born in Oudtshoorn, on December 9, 1959, the only son and the youngest of six children. My mother had told me how much my dad had prayed at night for a boy to have his name – Ron – who would be an artist. He was well known as a Master Gate, an art teacher. Art was his passion. I was always helped him in the afternoons with all sorts of school tasks that concerned art. This involved everything from the painting of backgrounds / curtains for concerts or performances to the printing of athletics vests for school sport and the making of posters. I still do silkscreen printing for schools, churches and other organizations. As a young child I had a rewarding hobby: I made illustrations and teaching aids for the teachers and students in and around Oudtshoorn. My father had a goal, which was to expose me to the public by regularly entering me into art competitions at schools and the annual Agricultural show. He has also exposed me to artists such as Hekkie Moos, Nico Prince and Amos Langdown,. I matriculated in Knysna in 1979. My dad took me Knysna with the view of having me thoroughly “kneaded” by Amos Langdown. The former principal of Knysna Senior Secondary School, Mr I January, was a remarkable man and good friend of my father who kept me informed of art competitions and activities in and around Knysna, which I participated in, and always walked away with the first prizes.
I had no formal art training and was sharpened by the above people. I am very inspired by remarkable people, including a good friend, the renowned artist Selvin Pekeur of Paarl.
I am inspired by God in the way he manifests himself in all forms and ways of nature around me.
I like painting because it is the only way I know of to give expression to my feelings.
Colour is the most wonderful SPICE IN LIFE-I can use IT CAN BE APPLIED TO MY TASTE AND IT IS THE ONLY THING WHICH UNDERSTANDS ME.”
